Frequently used abbreviations in US
Many American Students from Indonesia say that speaking is easier than listening. It is because of using abbreviation of some words or phrases that not only make those words/phrases sound confusing but also become so fast to say that finally difficult to understand.

Below are some very popular abbreviation and used frequently. You will see those in pronunciation because it’s commonly used in speaking. But some are commonly used in writing such as in Novel, magazine, and so on, for these words/phrases will be given the sign asterisk (*).

Standard ==> Abbreviation ==> Example ==> Notes

And ==> ‘n ==> where ya going? ==> ya can be followed one and more words.

Because ==> ‘cause (*) ==> I hate her ‘cause she’s very arrogant

Does she ==> dushi ==> Dushi speak English?

Give me ==> gimme (*) ==> Gimme the money!

Going to ==> gonna/gonnu (*) ==> I’m gonna give you my shoes/I’m gonnu ask him.

Get out of here ==> get outta here (read: ged oudda here)

As we know that English Conversation is very important to learn. There are many kinds of English conversation, depends on the topic, place, situation, purpose, and our need. For examples, telephone conversation.
Almost everyday, everyone does conversation via phone. We must know how to talk to other by phone. Let’s read and learn the conversation below.

1. If getting through to a right person
Lucy is calling Anton, but he isn’t so sure if that is him.

Lucy : Hello, could I speak to Anton, please?
Anton : Yes, speaking
Lucy : Hi, this is Lucy, Do you remember me?..
Anton : Oh..Hello, Lucy, how are you?

2. If not getting through to the right person
Lucy intends to call Anton, her friend, then she call his house-phone number. But Mrs. Merry, Anton’s mother who receives the phone.

Lucy : Hello, could I speak to Anton, please?
Mrs. Merry : I'm sorry, he's not at home at this moment. Who’s speaking?
Lucy : This is Lucy speaking, Ma’am, When do you expect him back?
Mrs. Merry : I think he'll be back in about thirty minutes, at the latest.
Lucy : Well, may I leave a message?
Mrs. Merry : Yes, of course.
Lucy : Would you please ask him to call me when he gets back.
Mrs. Merry : Ok. Does he know your number?
Lucy : I'm afraid he doesn't know. My mobile number is 812660721
Mrs. Merry : 812660721. All right. Thanks for calling.

3. If wrong number
Now Lucy has dialed the wrong number

Lucy : Could I speak to Anton, please?
Someone : Oh, sorry? Anton? But I think there’s no one by that name here. I’m afraid you’ve got the wrong number.
Lucy : Wrong? This is Mrs. Merry’s house, isn’t it?
Someone : No, this is Mrs. Melly’s house.
Lucy : Oh I am sorry to have bothered you

HOW TO BE A GOOD ORATOR

Do you want to become a good orator? Here are some tips for you.

A good orator means that he or she can speak with good and right pronunciation, intonation, tone, and attitude. Like writing a blog, an orator should have a communicative language and good skill of speaking, because an orator must be able to encourage the audience spirit, to make sure, and to entertain because an orator should have one or some purposes and goals.
So how can an orator do that?
1. Use language that’s easy to be understood by audience.
2. Use some examples and illustrations of concept or idea you are talking about.
3. Use your body language to support your communication with your audience.
4. Avoid a monotony oration, if you bring the script, present with your style of language, not glued to the script.
5. Entertain your audience with humor so they are not boring.
6. Ask some questions to know whether they understand the topic.
7. Make a conclusion at the end.
